Lawrence Hospital Center's Bargain Box Celebrates 60th Anniversary
Bronxville, NY (September 7, 2006) - Lawrence Hospital Center's Bargain Box marks its 60th anniversary when it opens its doors for business on Thursday, September 7th at 9:30am. The popular thrift shop has a long and rich history touching many lives in Bronxville and the surrounding communities. Volunteers from Lawrence Hospital Center's Auxiliary oversee the Bargain Box. "Over the years, hundreds of volunteers have passed through our doors lending a helping hand. They organize and sort merchandise, manage the budget, and provide expert customer service to our shoppers," explained Terry Martino, Director of Volunteers at Lawrence Hospital Center.
What can you find at the Bargain Box? Treasures abound! Currently, there is fall clothing (including a designer's rack); furniture; bric-a-brac; jewelry; and antique collectibles. During the past sixty years, there have been some unusual donations to grace these shelves. One year, someone dropped off two big bags of Escada clothing. The exclusive designer-wear had a retail value of approximately $10,000. Other unusual finds: an antique card shuffler circa 1940; unclaimed jewelry from the authorities; and two highly sought after handmade Raggedy Ann Dolls.
Co-chairs of this year's Bargain Box are Joanne Vecchione, a volunteer for 15 years and daughter of one of the Auxiliary's original members, Helen Paulus; and Lucy Rossi, a 22 year veteran.
Proceeds from sales at the Bargain Box benefit Lawrence Hospital Center. Since 1946, the Bargain Box has donated more than 5 million dollars to Lawrence. Bargain Box hours are Monday – Friday, 9:30am – 4:00pm; Saturday, 10:00am – 2:00pm; and closed on Sundays. So stop by and shop awhile, you never know what treasures you may find.
